The Biden administration has announced it will provide “cluster bombs” to Ukraine and will send thousands of them as part of the new military aid package of $800 million dollars.
Cluster bombs are deadly weapons that have been banned by more than 120 countries because they put civilians at risk.
The bombs are dropped from aircraft or fired from the ground. The bombs break apart and disperse into hundreds of smaller bombs.
But up to 40% of the bombs fail to detonate on impact and can lie undetected and kill civilians when they accidentally come across them.
60% of cluster bomb casualties are people injured while undertaking everyday activities.
One third of cluster bomb casualties are children.
Civilians represent 97% of all cluster munition casualties.
This is why more than 120 countries have banned them.
The U.S. should not be sending cluster bombs to Ukraine.
