2012 Intel document: West will facilitate rise of Islamic State in order to isolate the Syrian government
The government watchdog group "Judicial Watch" published formerly classified documents obtained from the U.S. Department of Defense and the State Department.
One such document written by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) dated August 12, 2012 states that an "Islamic State" is desirable in Eastern Syria to implement the West’s policies.
The document stated that for "the West, Gulf countries, and Turkey, [who] support the [Syrian] opposition ... there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist [Wahabbi] principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime."
This DIA report was distributed among various government agencies, including the CIA, FBI, DHS, the State Department, CENTCOM and others.
The document proves that as early as August 2012, U.S. intelligence knew of the possible rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), but instead of presenting the group as an enemy, the report suggests that the terror group would be a U.S. asset.
The document also stated:
"The Salafist (Saudi Arabian Wahabbi), the Muslim Brotherhood, and AQI (al-Qaeda in Iraq) are the major forces driving the insurgency in Syria.
"The West, Gulf countries, and Turkey support the Opposition; while Russia, China, and Iran support the regime (Syrian government).
"AQI (al-Qaeda in Iraq) supported the Syrian Opposition from the beginning, both ideologically and through the media."
"There was a regression of AQI in the western provinces of Iraq during the years of 2009 and 2010; however, after the rise of the insurgency in Syria [Muslim Brotherhood in early 2011], the religious and tribal powers in the regions began to sympathize with the sectarian uprising. This appeared in Friday prayer sermons which called for [foreign] volunteers to support the Sunni's in Syria.
"The future assumptions of the crisis:
"Development of the current events into proxy war: Opposition forces are trying to control the eastern areas (Hasaka and Der Zor), adjacent to the western Iraqi provinces (Mosul and Anbar)."
"In addition to neighboring Turkish borders, Western countries, the Gulf States and Turkey are supporting these efforts. This hypothesis is most likely in accordance with the data from recent events, which will help prepare safe havens under International sheltering, similar to what transpired in Libya when Benghazi was chosen as the command center of the temporary government."
"If the situation unravels there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality in Eastern Syria, and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the Opposition want (the West, Gulf States and Turkey)."
"ISI (Islamic State of Iraq) could also declare an Islamic State through its union with other terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria."
Note: Even knowing that the possibility of a creation of an Islamic Law State was possible, which would destroy the Christian and other minority communities inside Syria, the US continued to arm the Opposition. The following was reported six months after the above Intel report was issued:
"With help from the C.I.A., Arab governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to Syria’s opposition fighters in recent months, expanding a secret airlift of arms and equipment."
"The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year ... It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights ..."
"And even as the Obama administration has publicly refused to give more than “nonlethal” aid to the rebels, the involvement of the C.I.A. in the arms shipments ... has shown that the United States is more willing to help its Arab allies support the lethal side of the civil war."
"Most of the cargo flights have occurred since November [2012], after the presidential election in the United States."
"The scale of shipments was very large, according to officials familiar with the pipeline and to an arms-trafficking investigator who assembled data on the cargo planes involved."
“A conservative estimate of the payload of these flights would be 3,500 tons of military equipment ... The intensity and frequency of these flights,” are “suggestive of a well-planned and coordinated clandestine military logistics operation.”
"Although rebel commanders and the data indicate that Qatar and Saudi Arabia had been shipping military materials via Turkey to the opposition since early 2012, a major hurdle was removed late last fall after the Turkish government agreed to allow the pace of air shipments to accelerate."
A "former American official noted that the size of the shipments and the degree of distributions are voluminous: “People hear the amounts flowing in, and it is huge,” he said. “But they burn through a million rounds of ammo in two weeks.”
"On a string of nights from April 26 through May 4, [2012] a Qatari Air Force C-17 — a huge American-made cargo plane — made six landings in Turkey. By Aug. 8 the Qataris had made 14 more cargo flights. All came from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a hub for American military logistics in the Middle East."
"American and other Western officials, and rebel commanders, have said Qatar has been an active arms supplier..."
