The Christian village of Yabroud was attacked by the US-backed "Free Syrian Army" (a Muslim Brotherhood army) in coordination with al-Qaeda in Syria (aka al-Nusra). Villagers were massacred and brutalized.

After rescuing the village, the Syrian National Army helped rebuild the village and also built new churches. After rebuilding was completed, a statue of the Virgin Mary was unveiled at a ceremony on September 10, 2015. The statue is one of the largest of the Virgin Mary in Syria.
The town of Yabroud was home to one of the oldest churches in Syria. The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the fourth century. Yabroud is also famous for an ancient pagan temple, Jupiter’s Temple, which later became the Cathedral of Constantine and Helen. The Cathedral of Constantine and Helen is a Greek Catholic church. |
The church contained a beautiful collection of historical icons -- before the terrorists destroyed them.
The terrorists destroyed the church, its icons, shredded the evangeliary and burned the ancient altar.
The residents of Yabroud who were unable to escape, were held captive for almost three years. Finally, in March of 2014, after months of fierce fighting, the Syrian National Army and National Defense Forces rescued the town.
US-backed "Free Syrian Army" (Muslim Brotherhood) and al-Qaeda occupied Yabroud and made life terrifying for its Christian population. The terrorist armies destroyed Yabroud's ancient crosses and statues and used explosives on the cathedral.

Those Christians who had remained in Yabroud during the terrorist occupation, were forced to pay the Jizra, the Islamic “protection” tax, but in reality it is a taxation to remain alive. And even when Christians paid the tax, the terrorists subjected villagers to daily violence and brutality, and many times they killed the Christians, even when they paid the tax.
