The UN’s long history of rape and sexual misconduct
UN operations in Bosnia during the 1990s was full of reports of rape and sexual abuse of the local population by UN workers.
In the late 1990s, up into the present, children orphaned by the conflict in Congo thought they’d find refuge at UN peacekeeping camps, but instead the majority of these orphans found themselves raped.
In 2006, investigations unveiled systematic abuse by UN workers in Liberia. UN workers were demanding sex from refugees in exchange for food.
In South Sudan, UN personnel were making pornographic videos, including the raping of a 12-year-old. UN workers continuously sexually exploited children in South Sudan despite ongoing complaints.
In 2007, UN officials admitted that more than 300 people conducting UN duties had been investigated for sexual misconduct. An internal report revealed that an additional 91 UN higher ups had been accused of rape, sexual assault, having sex with minors, offering jobs in exchange for sex, and other malfeasances.
In 2016, mass rape of women and girls in South Sudan was reported in a UN camp for the displaced in full view of UN peacekeepers, who did nothing to prevent or stop the attacks.
In the Central African Republic (CAR) in 2016, during Muslim attacks on Christians, UN peacekeeping missions faced criticism over participating in sexual abuse and failing to aid Christians being raped. Additionally, instances were reported in which civilians were attacked, abused, and exploited by the UN peacekeepers.
More than 2,000 sexual abuse and sexual exploitation complaints were made against UN peacekeepers and personnel worldwide from 2005-2017. These were "official complaints" and do not count the massive numbers that went unreported due to the victims' circumstances and inability to do so.
In South Sudan in April 2018, just months after the publication of a report on how the United Nations had allowed sexual assault to flourish around the world at its operation bases, more mass rapes took place in South Sudan, where perpetrators continued without interference from UN peacekeepers.
The UN's sexual abuse and exploitation at their operations worldwide reveals the underpinning of the organization as a whole.
And despite pledging reform for more than a decade, the UN has failed to stop the abuse and has made no attempts to help victims.
